A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry

A Fine BalanceA Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was pleasantly surprised by A Fine Balance as I'd heard people say it was disjointed and too all-over-the-map to really enjoy. But really I find it's somewhat erratic weaving to be part of the charm.

You hop from one well fleshed character to another in this tumble in and out of both good and bad luck. Fates intertwine, storylines cross and by the time everything is over you have to take a few minutes to just breath and take it all in again. As I read there were a number of plot strings that seemed like they were loose or not meant to happen but Mistry's writing style managed to take the implausible and bring it all together, convincing me of plausibility. I found that I wanted so much to know the protagonists that I had a hard time putting this one to the side for other books.

A wonderful glance at a changing and reshaping India through the rise and fall of the common person.
